Multipath in VMware vSphere

This is one interesting topic in your storage environment. so. let's understand the meaning of multipathing so that we understand its purpose and definition.

Let's start with definition :- Multipathing is a technique that lets you use more than one physical path that transfers data between the host and an external storage device. in case of any failure in any component under storage, adapter, switch & cable, esxi can switch onto another physical path. It also balance the I/O load over multiple physical path to avoid failure or disconnection between storage and vSphere environment.

There are two option in VMware vSphere to configure multipath as given below.

ISCSI software adapter & Hardware adapter.

A software iSCSI adapter is a VMware code built into the VMkernel. Using the software iSCSI adapter, your host can connect to the iSCSI storage device through standard network adapters. The software iSCSI adapter handles iSCSI processing while communicating with the network adapter. With the software iSCSI adapter, you can use iSCSI technology without purchasing specialized hardware.

to configure Software ISCSI adapter follow below steps.

Click on Esxi host on which you wish to add software ISCSI adapter.

The moment you click on ISCSI option, below window will prompt on screen. Rescan he adapter to compete the configuration.

Hardware adapter :- A hardware iSCSI adapter is a third-party adapter that offloads iSCSI and network processing from your host. Hardware iSCSI adapters are divided into categories.

Setting up software SCSI is very simple process and can be configure in few steps that given below.

When the task is completed, select the vmhba<NUMBER> adapter that is listed under iSCSI Software Adapter. Under Adapter Details > General, select the Edit button:

Now, you need configure port binding and then close Dynamic discovery parameter to enter target storage IP/host DNS name.

Click Add to enter aIP/DNS name of target storage.

Rescan storage adapter to reflect the changes immediately.

For hardware ISCSI configurations. please follow below parameters.

Install an independent hardware iSCSI adapter on an ESXi host, you might need to change its default network settings so that the adapter is configured properly for the iSCSI storage.

  1. In the vSphere Client, navigate to the ESXi host.

  2. Click the Configure tab.

  3. Under Storage, click Storage Adapters, and select the adapter (vmhba#) to configure.

  4. Click the Network Settings tab and click Edit.

  5. In the IPv4 settings section, disable IPv6 or select the method to obtain IP addresses.

In the DNS settings section, provide IP addresses for a preferred DNS server and an alternate DNS server. You must provide both values.

Once you close the physical adapter configurations, rescan the adapter on vSphere level and check storage capacity LUN's. it must e visible for you.
